Announcing a truly 'once in a lifetime' voyage on board the ice-strengthened MV Ortelius: all the major Sub-Antarctic Atlantic islands, some of the major ecological 'hot spots' combined into one voyage. During this unique voyage visit the wildlife-rich Falkland islands, South Georgia (famous for its elephant seals, king penguins and breeding grounds of the wandering albatross) with the rarely visited and uninhabited South Sandwich Islands, home to the world’s largest chinstrap penguin colony. The expedition will also aim for a landing on the continent of Antarctica.
Departing Puerto Madryn, Argentina on 1st November, in 23 adventurous days you have the chance to visit Carcass and Saunders islands in the rugged western Falklands, with their colonies of albatross and penguins; several stops on amazing South Georgia and then a real expeditionary adventure to the unknown: the remote and uninhabited South Sandwich Islands. Uninhabited that is except for millions of penguins and seals! These active volcanic islands, far out in the Scotia Sea to the east of the Antarctic Peninsula are the home to literally millions of Adelie and chinstrap penguins breeding on the ashy slopes. Zavodovskiy Island is the home to over 2 million chinstrap penguins, making it the world's largest colony. The voyage continues onwards to possible landings in the South Orkney Islands before visiting the Antarctic Peninsula and hopfully a continental landing.
